Special Olympics – Closing Ceremony

Unfortunately today we say goodbye to our Special Olympians. The closing ceremony was based on our beautiful foreshore with the athletes parading down the street through and ending up in the park with a concert and fireworks to close out the games.

Special Olympics – Day 5

I was lucky enough to get another day of leave from my Monday to Friday job, so that i could shoot the last day of competition for the Special Olympics.

My morning started off at the football (soccer)

From the football i headed back over to the basketball for an afternoon of medal presentations:

Once these had finished i ducked next door to the badminton medal presentations:

Once the medal presentations were done, i then headed to Stockton Beach for what i think definitely has to be the best event of the whole games – beach experience. This was where all the athletes were taken to a beach around Newcastle (we used about 7 local beaches) and they got to experience the surf culture/experience that we are so lucky to have here. They got to play in the water, hang with our amazing lifesavers and run around on the beach. The weather and seas were just perfect we couldnt have ordered a better afternoon. The smiles on the faces of the athletes had everyone smiling and at times i think it was hard to find a single person that wasnt smiling ear to ear!

Special Olympics – Day 2

Day 2 of competition and i was stationed at the University Gym/Pool for Badminton and a few sneaky pool shots 🙂

Today there were lots of medals – I’m talking tons of them. Its always so wonderful to see the competitors receive their medals and then proudly show them off to anyone who will look and then to watch the poses and stances as they show their families – See I’ve got this, what about you !!! Its brilliant.

Special Olympics – Let the Games Begin

Day 1 of competition and i was tasked with basketball and table tennis. We had 6 photographers covering 4 basketball courts and 8 table tennis courts, needless to say we were kept very busy !!!

The competitiveness of these athletes should not be under-estimated but its the humility and caring that really gets you – they fall over, get knocked over and its just as likely to be someone on the other team helping them up and cheering them back into the play as it might be someone on their own team.

There were no medals today but everyone was fighting to get through to the next rounds, so they left nothing on the benches including their smiles!

Special Olympics – Opening Ceremony

WOW! What a night. Another long, late night but oh so worth it. Tonight it was time to officially open the games. The venue – Hunter Stadium – Home the Newcastle Knights and Jets – Blue and Red territory, but tonight Green and Gold would rein supreme.

With almost full run of the stadium (not on the grass 🙁 )We walked those aisles, steps and corridors (more times than i want to count) taking in the whole atmosphere of 2000+athletes and approximately 20,000 fans and supporters hoping to capture the spirit of the night.

The opening ceremony was beautiful – so wonderful to see all the special dancers, cheerleaders and performers having the time of their lives out in the middle of the stadium with everyone clapping and cheering them on.

The ceremony was fairly typical for these events in that there was the performers out on the field, the headline acts up on the stages and the obvious highlight of the night – the athletes entrance country by country and the lighting of the games cauldron. As is customary the home nation came in last and just about blew the house down – and took up all the remaining seats, it is certainly one large Aussie team here to do their absolute best.

Here some shots from the night, because words dont seem to do it justice.
Cultural Dancers- they would perform with approx 100 other performers of different nationalities in single performance of solidarity and nationality.

The looks of joy and excitement as the athletes came out of the tunnel onto the field were magnificent

The stream of Green & Gold almost went tunnel to tunnel !

Its something everyone looks forward to seeing – the cauldron
