The surfers are back in town

Originating back in 1985 as an attempt to showcase the city of Newcastle as more than just a BHP Steelworks industrial grime city, the BHP Steel International was created. It was at the time the richest professional surfing event in the world. it is now Australia’s largest surfing event and we have always been extremely lucky to have to best of the best appear at surfest year in, year out. The jewels in the Surfest crown are two World Tour Six-Star events – both the mens and the womens event. The entire festival runs for about 11 days and includes an Indigenous Classic, cadet, junior and of course the two main events the mens and womens.

The weather wasn’t looking fantastic but you cant knock back an opportunity to watch these guys and gals in action.

At the back of the baths

There are a few spots around town that i have shot on a number of occasions and just cant seem to get a shot that i love, i usually get a  shot or two that i like but not the one, Merewether Ocean Baths is one of those spots – although “Ten Lonely Blocks” is almost there! Unfortunately it still alludes me.

With a few of us keen to shoot, i headed out for a weekday sunrise – given that i also have a full time Monday to Friday job i don’t do this very often particularly on a Friday – they can be long enough as it is without adding a pre-dawn wake up to it!

The sunrise wasn’t anything too much to write home about but the light was very very nice and with tide and swells low i headed out onto the rock platform behind the bars, somewhere that i haven’t shot from before.

This is definitely one of my favorites from the morning, the light is just superb.

The clouds were a little heavy for to much colour action:

Merewether Sunrise

This was one.of.those.mornings. We had headed out to Merewether beach for a sunrise shoot. i got out of the car and it was very fresh and of course i didnt have a jacket. This was probably a sign that i should have stayed in bed!

The cloud was thick along the horizon, there really wasnt going to be much colour if any at all, the tide was really doing much at all – everything was flat and my mood was matching the elements.

We did it make to sunrise but it didnt take long for us to give each other that look – coffee!!!!

Incoming tide runs over the rock platform

Merewether Sunrise

It had a been a little while since we had shot at Merewether and i arrived just as the colour was starting to break along the horizon, so headed straight for the rocks along the outside of the pool where the receding water had created some little grooves that still had some water lying in them

Given that i hadnt said hello to anyone i headed to the pool and had a chat with the other guys, got a few nice colour reflections on the water before darting back to the rocks as the sun hit the horizon

Light up the sky

Its the weekend again and that usually means a sunrise with the sundance crew and todays certainly did not disappoint!

We headed to Merewether, a suburb of Newcastle, with superb beaches and at the southern end the Merewether Ocean Baths, apparently the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere. The baths and beach are a regular haunt for sundance sunrise events, so this morning about 25 photographers spread themselves out around the baths and along the beach looking to capture ‘that’ moment.

Arriving at about 5.30am there was already colour on the horizon with some cloud hanging around so we were hopeful the colour would stick around for us.

This was my first shot of the morning. I love how the colour has been picked up by the edge of the baths and caught the breaking waves against the back of the pool, so it looks like the pool is on fire.

MerewetherThe clouds break up a little off the horizon and then lit up fire engine red and a cracker sunrise followed.
