When the surfers come to town

We are blessed in Newcastle to have some of the best beaches around, not just in looks but also for water quality, swimming and surfing.

Each year since about 1985, the city has held a surfing competition known as “Surfest”. At the time it was the one of, if not the richest surfing competition in the country and attracted surfers from all around the world. Pretty much ever since, Surfest has continued to attract big name surfers, although for a period the star rating and prize money dropped. Surfest is home to local legend and international super star Mark Richards. Mick Fanning has won Surfest three times and Mark Occhilupo twice.

In 2013, Surfest regained its ASP 6 star rating (for both the men and women) and prize pool to match and some big name riders.

Finals day was a glorious day in the city and the swells had calmed a little – previous heats for the first time in its history had been moved the Harbour due to swells – and the riders were putting on a show for the large crowd. This is one of those events where you look up and down the beach and thank ‘damn i wish i had their lens!!!! So with my much smaller zoom lens, this is my take on Finals Day 2013.
