We were supposed to head south way south through Colorado into new Mexico n then cross into Texas at some point either today or tomorrow with Dallas n fort worth our next destination. One of the reasons for that route was to go thru Colorado springs where Pikes peak is. There are about 50 or something peaks in Colorado that are 14,000ft or more. Pikes is one that is accessible to the ordinary not fit freakish person! There is a lovely little swiss cog train that takes you to the top gives you a bit of time at the peak n then its back down to the bottom, unfortunately of course the train on tues n wed only goes at midday at this time of year which with 400 plus miles to cover n the train trip taking about 3 hours it just wasn’t possible
So with a pout on my face i devised a new path, across Colorado into Kansas through the prairies n the south thru Wichita ( don’t you luv how that sounds!) Thru Oklahoma city n then into Texas.
So we hit hwy 70 n its derivatives and headed for Salina. The rolling hills n plains stretching out for as far as the eye can see is kinda like traveling thru the wheat belt in oz just no little oil rig hammers turning over in oz thank goodness!!
We stopped at the lovely n well set out Kansas welcome centre -wifi, toilets, tourist info, dog walk area (taking dogs with you everywhere here is very big), picnic tables all looking out onto the farms pretty nice – so we grabbed some maps n had our lovely chicken salad for lunch 🙂 n then kept truckin till we hit the KOA Salina our spot for the night
Mileage: 430 miles (approx 692km)
Steps: about 3000, yep we spent pretty much the whole day on our arse trucking across Colorado n part of Kansas (which apparently takes about 8hrs straight 75 mile an hours driving to traverse!)
