Beach Volleyball makes a smashing return to Nobbys

What an awesome weekend – and not just that weather ! We had an awesome weekend shooting beach volleyball at our wonderfully iconic Nobbys Beach.

The weekend saw the return of beach volleyball to Australian beaches with the Renault National Beach Volleyball series – an 8 round series taking beach volleyball to some of the most iconic beaches in Australia – Nobbys, Glenelg, St Kilda, Surfers,Scarborough and Manly. Many of the top mens and womens players will be participating with some of them vying for a spot in the 2012 London Olympics.

Nobbys looked a real treat with 6 outer courts looking spectacular with the bright yellow Renault  and Garnier banners and nets just making the beach ‘pop’ in the sunshine. A full purpose built centre court set up for spectators, Nobbys lighthouse sitting high above the court on one end, the rolling waves of the beach on another and a rocking DJ made for a fantastic atmosphere. Add to that the legendary, very capable and knowledgeable Kerri Pottharst commentating over the 3 days – providing advice on how the game is played, insights into the players and some comedic relief with commentating partner John Fogarty all making for a very enjoyable time indeed.

Saturday we managed to catch a few of the knockout rounds for the women, such skills and athleticism on display – really reminded me how much i need to get back into some exercise after so much traveling with work the past 8-9 months. The games were brilliant but i must say we were just a little taken with team Huddy/Swain – just something about their tenacity but also the fun they were having on court i think – who unfortunately were knocked out and finished 7th – still a great outcome.

Sunday saw the finals and we managed to catch both the mens and womens finals. Both absolute crackers and boy can those men smash that ball around the court. The mens game between the players and commentators was an absolute hoot – Frankie and Bo sure are absolute characters of the court.

If you get the chance, get along and support this series and all the players, many of whom are only able to do this alongside their jobs that pay the bills that let allows them to do what they really love. Its a great aussie sport in some great aussie spots.
